Aussie Aussie Aussie!

Oi oi oi! Boy oh boy – you are a creative lot aren’t you?

I have always known that Australians were great designers – I have been admiring Aussie wares at trade shows, fairs and shops from New York to Milan and back for years, however at this years inaugural DEN Fair in Melbourne (http://www.denfair.com.au), they really pulled out all the stops and showcased the best Australian (and international) brands together under one roof. It was a refreshing change from some of the other Melbourne ‘design’ shows, and it really gave me a big boost and respect for the talent coming out of this great land. I must say – I even felt a bit of (honorary) Aussie pride.

Some of my favorite Australian brands are not only designed here in Melbourne but manufactured here too. Anyone in OZ with any interest in design knows Jardan (http/::www.jardan.com.au), and we know them for a reason – they are fabulous and they design and make true pieces of design that are not only timeless in their style, but also their craftsmanship. All of their pieces are made locally as well, in Melbourne, by hand! That is really cool considering how easy it is to jump over the pond and cut manufacturing costs down dramatically. With Jardan you are paying for quality, and you are getting it. If you ask me that’s worth a premium – especially if it’s Aussie designed and made.

When I first discovered Porcelain Bear (http://www.porcelainbear.com) it was a bit of a ‘come to Jesus’ moment. I was seriously moved by the beauty and grace of their bespoke porcelain light fittings and homewares. The attention to detail, the elegance of the material, the lightness and the weight – I know I am gushing, but seriously, Gregory Bonasere and his partner Anthony are masters at their craft, and I have the utmost respect for their creations that are more than just a pretty object, but something that retains meaning in its thoughtful creation and simple elegance – simply stated the pieces have soul. Bravo boys, bravo.

Another favorite from the show was ‘In The Sac’ (http://www.inthesac.com.au) – a clever name for a delicious range of linen from another Aussie brand. I am completely obsessed. I got my first set of linen bed linen about 6 months ago and I immediately demoted all my cotton bedding to the back of the cupboard. Honestly, if you ask me, there is nothing sexier than a slouchy pure linen draped bed. Add to that a range of sumptuous colours, and you have to give me a really good reason to get out of bed. There are a number of companies producing similar products, but ‘In The Sac’ is one of the few Aussie brands that has dedicated themselves 100% to linen, and I am in love.

Look – the bottom line is that I could keep going on like this all day – I could keep gushing about all these great Aussie brands, but I don’t want to bore you with my romantic words of adoration. Do yourself a favor – take a look at the DEN fair site and see for yourself – you too will fall in love with these bloody creative Australians!! The talent is undeniable and it is really rather exciting. So take a look, seek them out, and support your sisters and brothers by buying and loving your Aussie brands. Australian designers clearly ‘punch above their weight’ on the international stage. I’ve seen it first hand. Love it!

Above is a lovely shot from Jardan’s booth at the show – note the linen linen!
