Layer it on Me!

Burrr… Can you feel that? Winter is here and its time to hunker down and rug up.

When it comes to the winter months, my fashion sense translates to my interior sense, and vice versa. It all comes down to layers, so…”Layer it on me” I say, both inside the home and out.

The beauty about layering is that (within reason) anything goes. You can mix textures, prints and patterns, you can lean, you can stack, you can tack – the options are limitless, and the real beauty lay in the fact that layering as a look is very non-committal. The look can be achieved by purchasing soft furnishings and linen, small homewares and accessories and mix them in with what you already have. Who says your bed linen has to match? Not me!

Set yourself free and have some fun with it. If you don’t like your creation, fear not. It’s not a renovation, it’s a re-invention, so just keep trying until you get it right.

My first tip when it comes to layering is to know when to stop. Just take a step back from your creation between each addition and assess (it’s kind of like plucking your eyebrows – one at a time). My next tip is your colour palate. It’s OK to mix it up a bit, but as we are in winter here in OZ, I would shelve the bright colours until Spring/ Summer. However, if your feeling like mixing it up – opt for a single pastel (NY Fashion Week saw a lot of lilac for the winter) amongst cozy tones and hues like – brown, navy, taupe, mustard, wine, sage – you get my drift.

Lastly, leave a little blank space. The point is to create a cozy warm space that encourages nesting, so after you finish creating your masterpiece, take one thing away.

Now, go forth and layer! And P.S. All my tips apply to a stylishly assembled outfit as well as your home.
