High / Low
Do you remember Fashion Police (RIP Joan Rivers)? It was such an epic (and bitchy) guilty pleasure. Every week, up until Joan’s untimely death, I would curl up on the sofa and revel in the highs, lows, and everything in between of the past week’s red carpets, all peppered with Joan’s unique barbs and hilariously inappropriate jokes.
It was on Fashion Police where I first encountered the ‘High/Low’ trend. This trend involves mixing inexpensive pieces from stores like H&M, Topshop, or Zara with high-end designer items. For example, Beyoncé once paired a $100 Topshop ensemble with a $2,000 Gucci bag—classic High/Low.
I love that Hollywood has embraced this trend, especially since I’ve been doing it for years without realizing it had a name. It’s a testament to how, with some creative mixing and a keen eye, you don’t need to spend a fortune to look great. For instance, if you’re wearing a little black dress from Zara with a pair of Prada shoes, no one will know that the dress is from Zara. It’s all about clever pairing and smart shopping.
Since the days of Fashion Police, the High/Low trend has evolved to include mixing formal and informal clothing. No one does this better than Jenna Lyons, the former president of J.Crew. Her red carpet outfits and everyday looks often feature unconventional pairings, like a full-length feather skirt with a men’s jumper or a tulle skirt with a denim jacket. These may seem like mismatched bedfellows, but they prove that opposites do attract.
Whether it’s the original High/Low trend or this more recent interpretation, the concept applies to your home as well. Smart shopping, creative mixing, and thinking outside the box can result in stunning combinations.
It’s all about being savvy and spending your hard-earned cash wisely. We all want our homes to look high-end, but you don’t have to spend a fortune to achieve that look.
